COURSE DESCRIPTION

This online course is an intensive introduction to the fundamentals of teaching and singing the contemporary vocal styles of mix, belt, and contemporary styled classical and their application to Musical Theater and Commercial Music repertoire and performance. It provides you, the teacher, with the basic skills, teaching tools, and live coaching to help you and your voice students succeed. 

This course is for Classical voice teachers who want to sing and teach contemporary styles; Professional performers and skilled vocalists who want to transition into teaching voice; and vocalists who want to understand the voice from a teacher's perspective.

  • 26 Online Group Coaching Sessions.
  • Each module includes some or all of the following: workbooks, video instruction, handouts, written instruction,  assignments, listening lists, quizzes, surveys, suggested reading, and recommendations for further study.

  • Each module can be completed in a month. Plan to spend 3-5 hours per week on learning, practicing, and coaching. More if you are able!

Emily Castleton, DMA

Dr. Emily Castleton is a world-class voice technician, scientist, vocal styles and acting coach, and Vocologist. She holds a BFA in Music-Dance-Theater from Brigham Young University, an MM in Vocal Performance-Opera from BYU, and a DMA in Contemporary Voice Pedagogy (Science Research) from Shenandoah Conservatory at Shenandoah University. With over 30 years of private and university teaching experience at four universities, Dr. Castleton currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Contemporary Voice in the Theatre Department at the University of Utah. Emily’s students and former students perform professionally on Broadway, in Broadway touring companies, on cruise ships, at regional theaters, as lead singers in bands, as recording artists, and on television, while others teach professionally at the collegiate and private studio level. She has helped many students successfully prepare for college auditions in music theater, music-ed, music therapy, opera and commercial music programs. She has also helped many students prepare for high school and regional musical theater auditions and competitions. Emily has performed worldwide and at many local and regional theaters. She is a member of NATS, PAVA, and the Voice Foundation and is an NCVS-trained Vocologist. She has presented at the Voice Foundation's Annual Symposium in Philadelphia and has taught classes, presented masterclasses, and workshops at different universities and high schools.
